Shostakovich "Symphony No. 5"

(PPSS Reporter Baek Hyun-seok) The third performance of Ham Shin-ik and Symphony Song’s ‘2026 Masters Series’ will be held at Lotte Concert Hall on Saturday, May 30, at 7:30 PM.

Following the grand tour that began with ‘Mahler’s Resurrection’ in February and ‘Scheherazade’ in March, this performance features a program that illuminates the tension, contrast, and inner human emotions contained within 20th-century Russian music through the works of Shostakovich and Prokofiev.

For this performance, pianist Kim Kyu-yeon will take the stage as a soloist, collaborating with Ham Shin-ik and Symphony Song for the second time. Having already demonstrated deep musical chemistry through a collaboration in 2025, they are set to showcase an even more expanded musical world by taking on a new repertoire, Prokofiev’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 2’.

Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is a work that simultaneously demands explosive energy, extreme technique, and delicate emotional e-x-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n, and is considered one of the most challenging repertoires for a pianist. Kim Kyu-yeon is expected to convincingly portray the dramatic contrasts and tension inherent in this piece through her characteristic concentration and profound interpretation.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, which will grace the second half of the performance, has established itself as the composer’s masterpiece since its release in 1937 and captures a tense sentiment within its classical form and clear structure.

This program creates contrast and balance through works of different characteristics, serving as a stage that demonstrates the musical depth and perfection that Ham Shin-ik and Symphony Song have pursued.
